Divide your students into groups of 5 members. Assign each group one theme of Geography. In a group they will use a placemat activity  (pg 163-164 of document; pg. 15-16 using pdf menu) to brainstorm, record and discuss their indivudual descriptors about their assigned theme.

Each group will present their summary of their theme.

Each student will then create a Wordle with the words on their placemat. Their Wordles will be displayed around the room for reference as they procede with their research.

Based on their exposure to the Five Themes of Geography the students will reflect on their local school area and complete the Question Builder (Koechlin & Zwaan, 2006 Q Tasks: The Student as Questioner p.64-68). The questions will guide their thinking of how the 5 themes of geography are represented in their local area.
